NSW Health Patient Survey

The NSW Health Patient Survey has been developed to obtain information from patients and carers across NSW about their experiences with health care services and is only one of several strategies being used by us to gain a complete picture of Patient and Carer experience, for the purpose of health serivce improvement.

By surveying our patients regularly, we can keep in touch with those aspects of care that are especially important to our patients.

The NSW Health Patient Survey is an important vehicle for feedback to our frontline clinical staff, allowing us to focus on issues identified by patients, as well as gauging how well improvements and reforms are being implemented and received by the community.

Each year over 200,000 surveys are mailed to patients in NSW who received inpatient and non-inpatient services across ten survey categories. Approximately 80,000 patients responded to the NSW Health 2009 Patient Survey which asked patients to report on their recent experiences of the public health system and the dimensions of care that research shows patients value, including:
  • access to care
  • coordination of care
  • patient preferences
  • information and education
  • physical comfort
  • emotional support
  • family and friends
  • continuity of care and transition after discharge.

Participating public health organisations include the eight Area Health Services and Children's Hospital Westmead. NSW Justice Health and the NSW Ambulance Service carry out separate customer survey and benchmarking activities with other like-organisations.

We have contracted Ipsos Australia Pty Ltd, in conjunction with NRC+Picker, to conduct the statewide Patient Survey project to highlight stronger and weaker areas of health service delivery and provide actionable data to inform health care and systems improvement initiatives.

NSW is the first state in Australia to use a comprehensive statewide survey of patients to identify key elements of the patient experience, and the survey's findings indicate an incremental improvement since the survey began in 2007.
