Current surveys conducted by the Health Survey Program
New South Wales Population Health Survey
The NSW Department of Health is currently conducting the NSW Population Health Survey, a telephone survey of about 12,000 people from all over NSW.
This survey is conducted every year between February and December.
The main aims of the survey are to learn more about: the health of people in NSW and the factors that affect it, the use of health services, and people's attitudes to health services and policies.
The questions in the survey cover a wide range of topics, including:
- use of and satisfaction with health services such as hospitals, emergency departments, and general practitioners
- physical and emotional health
- health conditions such as asthma and diabetes
- factors that affect health such as eating habits, smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical activity
- individual characteristics such as age, education, and languages spoken at home.
The Department encourages people who are contacted to participate in the survey. The results are of great value to the community in planning how to improve the health of people in NSW and local health services.

H1N1 influenza 09 Survey
The NSW Department of Health is currently conducting a telephone survey about human swine flu known as H1N1 influenza 09 involving about 800 people from Sydney and its surrounding suburbs.
The main aim of this survey is to learn more about swine flu and its affect on people.
The questions in the survey cover a wide range of topics, including:
- history of hospital admissions
- medication usage
- pre and existing health conditions such as asthma and diabetes
- factors that affect health such as smoking and alcohol consumption
- individual characteristics such as age, education, and languages spoken at home.
The NSW Department of Health encourages people who are contacted to participate in the survey.
Life Experiences Survey
The NSW Department of Health in conjunction with the School of Medicine at the University of Western Sydney is currently conducting a telephone survey with 2000 residents in NSW looking at how people deal and respond to traumatic events.
The survey aims to provide information to improve the way NSW Department of Health and emergency services support people who have experienced traumatic events or are involved in emergency situations in the future.
The questions in the survey cover a wide range of topics, including:
- your local community/neighbourhood
- general health
- emergency situations
- individual characteristics such as age, education, and languages spoken at home.
