Knowledge Management

Overview

In 2003, the Knowledge Management initiative in Quality & Safety a Steering Committee was established to develop and implement a knowledge management strategy in collaboration with the Centre for Clinical Governance Research (CCGR) at the UNSW to support knowledge sharing across Area Health Services and to disseminate lessons learned.

The aim of the strategy is to:

  • enhance the capacity of the Quality and Safety Unit to develop, capture and share knowledge to the NSW Health system
  • reflect knowledge management externally throughout the health system
  • ensure that evaluation and publication of work in the Quality and Safety Unit is reported and published.

Initiatives under the strategy included the Evaluation of the Safety Improvement Program (SIP) and Evaluation of the Incident Information Management System (IIMS) in NSWsafety notifications. Other activities include the distribution of information from other jurisdictions, immediate responses to reportable incident briefs, the establishment of communities of practice and cumulative knowledge learned from root cause analysis processes.

In 2008 the Lessons Learned website continues to provide critical information about the important lessons learned from the incident management process.
