NSW Hospital Waiting Times

The NSW Health waiting times website offers relevant information about public hospital waiting times and waiting lists.

You and your general practitioner can use this website to consider options that may be available to you to help reduce the amount of time you need for your surgery.  By looking at the latest available information on waiting times you can make better, informed choices about your treatment.

NSW public hospitals are striving to ensure that patients have timely access to hospital care and are admitted in the order of clinical need.

If you require elective surgery, your doctor will refer you to a specialist, who will place your name on a hospital waiting list. The length of time you wait will depend on the urgency of your condition. Not all elective surgery is urgent. Priority for admission is based on each patient's clinical need, which is the decision of your specialist.

If you have concerns about your waiting time for surgery and require advice or information about your waiting time, you can obtain assistance by doing the following:

  • Ask you general practitioner if he or she can recommend options that may reduce your waiting time. This may include reassessment by your specialist; or
  • Telephone the Surgery Access Line - 1800 053 456. This is a free call. The person who answers this call will be able to assist you to look at surgery options at either your local hospital or another facility.
