    Minister for Multiculturalism Ray Williams today launched Multicultural Health Week by celebrating the journey women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities have taken to good health. Mr Williams said the theme in 2017 -Women’s Journey to Good Health–iscrucial as 27.7 percent of NSW women speak a language other than English at home and a quarter of the state’s population were born overseas.

    The important role of carers from culturally and linguistically diverse(CALD) backgrounds is at the heart of this year’s Multicultural Health Week, Minister for Multiculturalism John Ajaka today announced. The theme of Multicultural Health Week 2016 is: Caring for Carers: Supporting people who look after someone. In 2015 there were over 2.8 million unpaid carers in Australia. Among them, 674,300 carers (25.7%) were born overseas. “Carers look after loved ones in need, and in return, we need to look after them.Reaching carers from every background is vital to supporting their selfless work and recognising their contribution to society as a whole,” Mr Ajaka said.Health Minister Jillian Skinner said Multicultural Health Week spreadsthemessageto diverse communities aboutthe importanthealth services available to them.

    Health Minister Jillian Skinner today launched Multicultural Health Weekin NSW by encouraging communities from culturally and linguistically diversecommunities to participate in their own health care journey.

    At a ceremony in Parliament House, Mrs Skinnersaid thetheme in 2015 -Rights and Responsibilities: Get involved in your health care-is apt when 27% ofNSW people speak a languageother than English at homeand 31% wereborn overseas. “The NSW Government respects the right of every citizen toaccess healthcare services and information in their language or in a way they understand,” she said.

    Dental Media Alert

    NSW Health is recommending that patients who have had invasive dental procedures at four private Sydney clinics over the past several years see their GP for testing for blood-borne viruses.

    The advice follows a Dental Council of NSW and NSW Health investigation of the clinics, which has identified multiple infection control breaches have likely occurred over an extended period.

    The four surgeries are The Gentle Dentist, located in both Campsie and the Sydney Central Business District (CBD), and Dr Robert Craige Starkenburg's clinics at Bondi Junction and Surry Hills.

Studies show that 96% of working-age Australians had at least one chronic disease risk factor and 72% had multiple risk factors. Research indicates that the greatest disease burdens aretobacco smoking, alcohol misuse, poor dietphysical inactivity andunhealthy weight. This year, Multicultural Health Week focuses on the health of workers urging them to make lifestyle changes, such as eat healthily, increase physical activity and achieve weight loss to help prevent or delay the progression of chronic diseases.

    Measles outbreaks in South East Asia trigger vaccination reminder for travellers

    Measles outbreaks in the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia have prompted an urgent reminder for people travelling to South East Asia to check they and their children are fully immunised for measles before their departure. Dr Vicky Sheppeard, Director of Communicable Diseases at NSW Health, said measles is highly contagious among people who are not fully immunised. “Measles is spread through coughing and sneezing, and is one of the most contagious infections known,” Dr Sheppeard said. “Complications can range from diarrhoea and ear infections to swelling of the brain and pneumonia.
