We are pleased to share research on enhancing and supporting the COVID-19 vaccination program for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities.

This research partnership is between UNSW, UTS, and NSW Multicultural Health Communication Service (MHCS). This work is led by Associate Professor Holly Seale, School of Population Health, UNSW Medicine & Health.

The interviews conducted with key government and non-government stakeholders working with CALD communities, provide key insights into enhancing communication and vaccine delivery to CALD communities. Find the research overview with potential deliverables at UNSW.

CALD Assist is a free communication app that helps health professionals communicate with patients with low English proficiency in low risk and basic care interactions.The app was developed by Western Health Victoria in partnership with the CSIRO and can be downloaded from the Apple App store or Google Play store. The Health and Social Policy Branch, Ministry of Health provided funding to MHCS for the development of resources to support the use of CALD Assist in NSW.

On 11 March, Ms Tish Bruce, Executive Director, Health and Social Policy Branch launched resources in an online webinar with M.C. Dr Marianne Gale, Director Population and Community Health SESLHD. Speakers: Lisa Woodland MHCS Director and A/Prof Ben Harris Roxas, South Eastern Sydney Research Collaboration Hub, (SeaRCH), UNSW. Participants included multicultural health staff, interpreters, and nursing and allied health staff from across NSW. Watch the video introduction to the app.

Stay tuned for the announcement of the opening of the 2021 Multicultural Health Awards. The Multicultural Health Awards are held biennially to coincide with Multicultural Health Week in September.

The awards encourage best practice in multicultural health communication. The awards will be open to health staff and staff of Health funded organisations, including NGOs that produce multilingual health resources.

COVID-19 Vaccine National Roll-out – Translated Resources

COVID-19 vaccines will be free and available to everyone in Australia including: citizens, permanent residents, temporary visa holders, refugees, people seeking asylum, and international students.

Mental Health – In Language Videos

It is important to look after the mental health of your loved ones during and beyond the pandemic. Translated mental health support videos are available in 15 languages: Arabic, English, Farsi, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Khmer, Korean, Nepalese, Portuguese, Sinhalese, Spanish, Turkish, and Vietnamese.

Steps for Contact Tracing – Translated Videos

When someone gets COVID-19, NSW Health asks them where they have been in the last few days. Steps for Contact Tracing videos are available in 10 languages: Cantonese, Greek, English, Hindi, Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish, Thai, Urdu, and Vietnamese

How to Wear a Mask – Multilingual Videos

Video guides on how to correctly wear a mask are now available in 42 languages: Arabic, Amharic, Assyrian, Bangla, Burmese, Cantonese, Croatian, Dari, Dinka, English, Fijian-Hindi, Filipino, French, Greek, Gujarati, Hazaragi, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Karen, Khmer, Korean, Lao, Macedonian, Mandarin, Mongolian, Nepali, Portuguese, Punjabi, Rohingya, Russian, Samoan, Serbian, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Tamil, Thai, Tibetan, Turkish, Urdu, and Vietnamese. 

Carer Support Information Posters

Multilingual posters from South Eastern Sydney Local Health District provide information on support services that are available to people who have caring responsibilities for family members or friends. Available in 10 languages: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese Traditional, English, Greek, Indonesian, Macedonian, Nepalese, Portuguese, and Spanish.

The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating

Translated information sheets produced by South Western Sydney Local Health District, Western Sydney Local Health District and Sydney Local Health District provide information on the five food groups and recommended serves each day for adults and children. Available in 12 languages: Arabic, Chinese Simplified, Dari, English, Filipino, Hindi, Khmer, Korean, Punjabi, Tamil, Turkish, and Vietnamese.

Learn the signs of stroke

In language information on the Stroke Foundation’s F.A.S.T. (Face. Arms. Speech. Time) Consumer Awareness and Education Project’s website aims to increase awareness of stroke and the signs of stroke nationally with a focus on targeted priority populations. Available in 11 languages: Arabic, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, English, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Macedonian, Turkish, and Vietnamese.

Breastfeeding tips for new mothers

Translated factsheets from South Eastern Sydney Local Health District, cover the basics of breastfeeding, support services, and explains the normal breast changes. Available in 6 languages: Bengali, English, Indonesian, Mongolian, Nepalese, and Thai.

2021: Ethnic Communities Council of NSW is seeking to employ people with lived experience of disability from Indigenous and CALD communities to deliver information about living well with a disability. Submit your interest.
