MHCS FEATURED NEWS

Welcome to the Winter edition of Polyglot. The NSW Multicultural Health Communication Service (MHCS) is excited to share information, events, and other opportunities to improve the health and wellbeing of culturally and linguistically diverse communities in 2022.

This winter, it was an honour for MHCS Deputy Director Jesusa Helaratne to present our work at the Communicable Diseases and Immunisation Conference 2022. The Effective Engagement with Communities presentation highlighted methods of engagement with multicultural communities and our partnership with NSW Ministry of Health on the COVID-19 response.

In addition, the panel highlighted key work across the sector from our colleagues: Associate Professor Holly Seale from UNSW, Dipti Zachariah from Western Sydney Local Health District, Donata Sackey and Mercy Moraa Nyanchoga from Mater Refugee Health, QLD, and Julie Ayre from University of Sydney.

Community Engagement Grants to promote three Cancer Screening Programs during Multicultural Health Week 2022

MHCS has offered grants up to $1,500 to local health districts and community organisations to support community engagement activities with culturally and linguistically diverse communities for Multicultural Health Week 2022, focusing on increasing knowledge of and confidence in participating in cancer screening.

Multicultural Health Week (MHW) celebrations are held across New South Wales each September. The aim of MHW is to raise awareness of health issues experienced by culturally and linguistically diverse communities and ways of addressing these issues.

Each year, there is a different theme. There are free downloadable resources developed to promote the key messages for the chosen theme. Find out more about the previous themes of MHW.

The theme of Multicultural Health Week 2022 is cancer screening.

Successful grant recipients will conduct community engagement activities with the support of bilingual health professionals and/or trained bilingual community educators (BCE) that focus on the three national screening programs: National Bowel Cancer Screening Program; BreastScreen Australia Program; and National Cervical Screening program. Community engagement activities include dissemination of information about all three programs. The Cancer Institute NSW (CINSW) resource, What is Cancer Screening? combines information on all three programs and is currently available in 37 languages.

COVID-19 continues to hinder their chance of survival with a 25% decrease in donations since the start of the pandemic. DonateLife are trying to change that by encouraging more Australians to register as an organ donor.
